Using Green Assets to Make Good Land Use Decisions

Scott Millar, Chief of Sustainable Watersheds, RI DEM

In a discussion geared toward practitioners, Dr. Matt Nicholson and Mr. Scott Millar will speak on how concepts and principles of Green Infrastructure can be used to guide local land use planning and strategic conservation. Many critical environmental decisions are made in Town Halls across the state; these include conservation planning, zoning, and stormwater management. Nicholson will discuss how local land use planners and conservation professionals are assessing their Green Infrastructure and can/have successfully implemented natural resource best management practices ensuring that land development patterns are ecologically sensitive and protect critical resources. Millar will speak about RI’s efforts to identify and map green assets to help ascertain where communities should concentrate growth into compact mixed use growth centers while avoiding and protecting our natural resources. landscape elements for conservation. Matt Nicholson’s talk will introduce the Green Infrastructure approach to strategic conservation. It will show how states and localities in the Mid-Atlantic are assessing their Green Infrastructure to ensure that land development patterns are ecologically sensitive and protect critical resources.
